What is in-home postpartum help?

In-home postpartum help is scheduled newborn care that reduces the physical and overnight demands placed on a recovering parent. A licensed pediatric RN handles feeding, diaper changes, soothing, settling, and baby-related cleanup so you can rest, move less, and focus on recovering. Your nurse cares for the baby. She does not treat or assess your recovery.

What's Included

What this service covers

Swipe through what a shift includes, or call and we will walk you through what fits your family.

Sleep that is actually protected

Meaningful sleep makes the early weeks more manageable and gives your body more opportunity to rest. Your nurse handles the night so you get a real stretch.

Feeding taken off your plate

Bottle feeds handled entirely, or baby brought to you and the settle taken over so you go straight back to sleep.

Practical help while you heal

Whether you had a vaginal delivery or a C-section, moving around is harder than people admit. Your nurse brings the baby to you rather than the other way around.

Practical answers about the baby

A pediatric nurse in the room at 3 a.m. is a very different thing from a search engine. She can also help you work out which questions belong with your own provider.

Someone who takes you seriously

Your nurse is not evaluating or treating your recovery, but she will take a concern seriously and encourage you to contact your OB, midwife, or emergency services when that is the right step.

Room to be a person

A shower without listening for crying. A meal eaten sitting down. These are not luxuries in week two.

Your Nurse

Who we send into your home

You are letting someone into your home. Here is what stands behind the person who arrives.

Leslie Brewer, CRNP, founder of On Call Peds Care, with her family
An active Alabama RN license
Current, in good standing, and recorded before a nurse is assigned to your family.
Pediatric or postpartum experience
NICU, pediatrics, postpartum, labor and delivery, or pediatric urgent care. Not general childcare.
Current certifications on file
Applicable credentials, which may include BLS, PALS, and NRP, are recorded at onboarding, along with years of clinical experience.
Led by a pediatric nurse practitioner
Leslie Brewer, CRNP, leads the clinical policies, nurse onboarding, and family support approach the team works to.
Matched to your family, not just to the calendar
Matched on your feeding plan and schedule, not on whoever happens to be free.
A calm presence at 3 a.m.
Your nurse may be the only healthcare professional physically present overnight, so calm judgment, clear boundaries, and timely escalation matter as much as a resume.

How It Helps

How newborn care protects your recovery

We do not medically treat the recovering parent. We remove the newborn workload so you can rest, move less, and recover.

Less lifting and moving

Your nurse brings the baby to you, handles diaper changes and resettling, and takes the repeated trips between bed, bassinet, kitchen, and changing table.

Longer stretches of sleep

Shifts can be arranged around breastfeeding, pumping, bottle feeding, or a combination plan, so protecting your sleep does not mean giving up how you want to feed. See feeding and lactation support.

Time to eat, drink, and shower

Your nurse is not household staff, but having the baby genuinely covered for a few hours is often the difference between eating properly and not eating at all.

Room for your own recovery routine

Time to rest, take your own medication on schedule, or walk as your provider has advised. Your nurse does not administer or change any of it.

Consistent overnight cover

Families who need the same support every night rather than a few shifts a week usually want overnight newborn care.

Your partner recovers too

A partner may be sleep deprived, back at work, managing older children, and looking after you. Plenty of families use these shifts so both parents sleep at once.

Who This Helps

This service may help if

  • You are recovering from a C-section or a difficult delivery
  • You need protected sleep through the first six weeks
  • Your partner has already gone back to work
  • You have little family support nearby
  • You are caring for older children as well as a newborn
  • You are breastfeeding but need someone to handle everything between feeds
  • You are recovering after a multiple birth
  • Repeated lifting, feeding, and settling has left you physically depleted

Scope

What is and is not included

Our pediatric RNs support your recovery by taking over newborn care and reducing the physical demands of the day or night. They do not replace your OB, midwife, or a maternal home health provider.

Included in every shift

  • Daytime or overnight shifts in your home
  • Bottle feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and settling
  • Bringing baby to you if you are breastfeeding
  • Safe sleep setup and attentive care through the shift
  • Washing bottles and pump parts used during the shift
  • A written log of feeds, diapers, and sleep
  • Practical guidance, and encouragement to call your provider when that is the right step

Not included

  • Medical treatment of your own recovery. Your OB or midwife manages that
  • Wound care or medication administration
  • Mental health treatment. We will help you get to the right person
  • General housekeeping, cooking, or sibling care
  • Emergency medical care. Call 911 or seek immediate care

Questions

Common questions about this service

Is this the same as a postpartum doula?

They overlap, but the training is different. A postpartum doula offers non-clinical support for the family. Our nurses are licensed RNs with pediatric experience, which matters most when something about the baby is not right. Many families value one or the other for different reasons.

Can you help after a C-section?

Yes, and it is a common reason families book. Lifting and getting in and out of bed are genuinely hard for weeks. Your nurse brings the baby to you and handles the parts that require moving around.

What if I am struggling emotionally?

Tell us. Your nurse is not a mental health provider and will not pretend to be, but she will take you seriously, and she will help you get to your OB, midwife, or another professional rather than leaving you to manage it alone.

How many shifts do families usually book?

Most concentrate care in the first six weeks, which is when recovery and sleep deprivation collide hardest. Some book every night for two weeks, others two or three nights a week for longer.

Can my partner be involved?

Of course. Plenty of families use these shifts so that both parents can sleep at the same time, which is otherwise almost impossible in the early weeks.
