What is a private newborn care class?

Newborn education and coaching is a scheduled session with a pediatric clinician focused on teaching rather than hands-on care. It covers reading your baby's cues, sleep and wake patterns, feeding, safe sleep, and what warrants a call to your pediatrician. It is education, not diagnosis or treatment.

What's Included

What this service covers

Swipe through what a session covers, or call and we will talk through what fits your family.

Reading your baby's cues

Hunger, tiredness, and overstimulation look different in every baby. Learning yours is worth more than any chart.

Sleep and wake patterns

What newborn sleep actually looks like, why wake windows are averages, and why your baby may not match the chart.

Safe sleep, set up properly

Current guidance applied to your actual room, crib, and routine rather than a diagram. If that is the only thing you want covered, a focused safe sleep visit is the shorter option.

Feeding, whichever way you feed

General education on breastfeeding positions, bottles, pumping routines, combination feeding, and feeding cues, plus the questions that belong with your pediatrician or IBCLC.

Common patterns, and reasons to call

Which newborn behaviors are commonly seen, which changes are worth raising with your pediatrician, and which are simply a Tuesday with a newborn.

Dedicated time for your questions

Time set aside for the things you have been saving up, without trying to fit them all into a short appointment.

In Practice

What happens during a session

  1. Before the session

    • Tell us whether you are expecting or your baby is already home
    • Choose the topics you want to prioritize
    • Pick in-home or virtual
    • Invite a partner, grandparent, or caregiver if it helps
  2. During the session

    • Start with the questions you have been saving
    • Work through cues, feeding, sleep, soothing, and safe sleep
    • Look at your actual nursery, crib, bottles, or pump
    • Separate common newborn variation from what belongs with a clinician
  3. After the session

    • Written notes or a resource list
    • Clear next steps
    • A short list of questions to take to your pediatrician
    • Follow-up sessions if you want them

Who This Is For

A private class may help if

This is the smallest way to work with us, and often the first. Families book it for very different reasons.

You are expecting your first baby

A private newborn class in the third trimester, built around what you actually want to know rather than a set curriculum.

The internet has made it worse

Conflicting advice from six sources is harder than no advice. One clinician, your questions, in one sitting.

You want the grandparents to hear it too

Safe sleep guidance has changed since they raised children. A partner, grandparent, or nanny hearing it first-hand beats having it relayed at midnight.

Your baby is home and sleep is confusing

Cues, wake windows, and what newborn sleep actually looks like, applied to your baby rather than to a chart. If the nights themselves are the problem, that is overnight newborn care.

Feeding questions, not a feeding crisis

Teaching rather than hands-on help. If you want someone watching a real feed and adjusting it, that is in-home feeding support.

You are planning ahead for help

Many families use a session to work out what support they actually need before booking overnight newborn care.

Choose Your Topics

Build your session around

Pick what matters to you. Most families cover four or five of these in a single session.

Questions

Common questions about this service

Is this available outside Birmingham?

Yes, virtually. Virtual sessions are available to families throughout the United States, because they provide general education rather than individualized diagnosis or treatment. In-home sessions are Birmingham area only.

Should we do this before the baby arrives?

Many families do, and it is a good use of the third trimester. Others wait until they are in it and have real questions. Both work, and some do one of each.

Is this sleep training?

No. This is teaching you what newborn sleep actually looks like and how to read your own baby. We do not run sleep training programs.

Can my partner or another caregiver join?

Yes, and we would encourage it. A grandparent or partner who has heard the same information first-hand is far more useful than one being relayed it second-hand at midnight.

What is the difference between this and a telehealth visit?

Education and coaching is teaching, available anywhere. A telehealth visit is a medical appointment that can involve assessment, diagnosis, and prescriptions, and is only available to patients located in Alabama at the time of the visit.
